Is it possible to avoid bad impacts by using good fuel ethanol?

Much of the global production of ethanol and other biofuels is considered to be non-sustainable. Since concern over climate change is the major force driving fuel ethanol use in Sweden, we need to know whether it is possible to screen the Swedish use of “good” ethanol from markets for ethanol with bad climate characteristics. Is it possible to avoid bad impacts by using “good” ethanol?
What characteristics do relevant markets have? What do we know about land-use change and its real impact on the climate characteristics of the fuels? These, and other, questions are complex and controversial issues on which we hope that this report, written by researchers in Sweden and Brazil, will cast more light on.
