Sweden's environmental objectives – for a sustainable society

Photo: Jan Töve/NWe shall solve our own environmental problems: we will not pass them on to future generations. Sweden has adopted 16 environmental quality objectives that provide beacons for all environmental work in Sweden, no matter where it is carried out, or by whom. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has overall responsibility that the environmental objectives are achieved.

    • Best practice examples

We have selected some of the most interesting Swedish environmental projects to form a knowledge base – the Best Practice Examples. We want to focus attention on municipalities’ environmental activities, disseminate knowledge and stimulate replication.

    • Role of the Swedish EPA

The activities of the Swedish EPA in the interests of sustainable development are based on the 16 environmental quality objectives and three action strategies adopted by the Swedish Riksdag.

    • Research

The new knowledge generated by the research programmes that the Swedish EPA fund help us achieve our mission and environmental quality objectives.

The system will be changed

The Environmental Objectives System will be changed following a Parliament decision on 22 June 2010, but the 16 environmental quality objectives will be kept. The information on this web site is to be updated.
