Swedish Clean Air Research Programme

The purpose of the Swedish Clean Air Research Programme (SCARP) is to maintain Sweden’s position as an important player in research on the human health impacts of air pollution.

The programme is based on air pollution research carried out under two previous programmes funded by the Swedish EPA and Mistra. Continued air pollution research of high international quality is vital if Sweden is to retain and enhance its ability to initiate action in this area

SCARP develops further several new aspects of the issue of air pollution. The effects on health will be given priority, in particular understanding the mechanisms behind the origin of airborne particles and their negative effects on people’s health. Another area given priority concerns the effects of nitrogen precipitation on ecosystems and biological diversity.

The programme will carry further the exploration of several new aspects of air pollution. Priority will be given to impacts on health and in particular to an understanding of the mechanisms underlying the origin of air-borne particles and their negative impacts on human health. Another high-priority area is concerned with the effects of nitrogen deposition on ecosystems and biodiversity.
The programme will be of major importance in shaping the policies that Sweden will be advocating in European and international organisations. It will also be of direct relevance to action in Sweden itself.
