Habitats and species

Photo: Ulf Risberg/NThe white-tailed eagle, our three seal species, small watercourses, farmland – those are some species and habitats that we monitor in order to establish the state of the environment. Here you can find some of the results of our environmental monitoring and other inventories.

    • The land environment

The Swedish landscape is constantly changing from numerous causes. Not all changes are for the worse from an environmental point of view, but they all have some effect on biodiversity.

    • Wetlands

Nearly a quarter of Sweden’s original wetlands have disappeared as a result of drainage and cultivation, and many of those that remain are profoundly affected by human activities.

    • The freshwater environment

Most of Sweden’s lakes and streams are in relatively good health despite the impact of human activities. Only a few are absolutely pristine, however.

    • The marine environment

The Baltic, the Skagerrak–Kattegat and their coasts are subject to human impacts of many different kinds. The main threats to marine biodiversity are from eutrophication and over-fishing.
