Hunting in Sweden

Foreign hunters that come to Sweden to hunt must pay the permit fee and carry the permit with you when you are hunting in Sweden. There are special rules for bringing hunting weapons to Sweden and the need for hunting exam.

The hunting register at the Swedish EPA records hunting examination results and fees received for hunting permits.

Hunting on the increase

There are roughly 264,000 hunters in Sweden. Most hunters are men, but more and more women are taking up hunting. Some 14,500 women were granted a hunting permit in 2008/09.

Permit fee

Foreign hunters must pay the permit fee. Swedish hunting permits are valid from 1 July to 30 June and must be renewed every year. The permit must be carried when hunting and must be produced on demand, eg, if requested by the police. The fee is SEK 300.

  • Payment by cheque is not accepted.
  • Please pay well in advance. At least two weeks before your hunting occasion.

Conditions for hunting

The Government decides the dates of the hunting season for various game species. Schedules 1 – 4 of the Hunting Ordinance give the dates applying in various counties. You can also find the dates on the Swedish Association for Hunting and Wildlife Management website. The association has been delegated responsibility for providing information about certain hunting issues.

The Swedish EPA is the sectoral agency responsible for hunting issues. We took over administration of the hunting permit and hunting examination registers in 2002.

The examination itself is administered by the hunting associations. Training courses are arranged by study associations and others. We registered 48,000 hunting examination passes in 2004.

Nowadays you must have passed the Swedish hunting examination to be eligible for a firearms licence, although there are some exceptions. Those Swedes possessing a firearms licence for hunting weapons issued before 1985 are not required to take the hunting examination. Certain foreign hunters are also exempt (see above).

Foreign hunters need special permits to bring their weapons to Sweden. You also need a special permit by the policy if you want to keep your weapons for more than three months in Sweden. For more information contact policy and customs.
