Regulations for Gotska Sandön National Park

Extracts from Proclamations SNFS 1987:19 and SNFS 1990:8

Within the national park it is forbidden to:

  • establish facilities for storing supplies and materials, including rubbish
  • run electrical or other lines in the ground or through the air, likewise pipes or lines of any sort through the water or on the seafloor
  • construct paths or roads
  • construct or enlarge buildings or other facilities
  • conduct military activities
  • dig, excavate, fill, bore, chisel, paint, blast, remove sand, or in any other way damage the ground, rocks or seafloor
  • dredge, or dump rubbish or any other materials
  • break off branches of, cut down or in any other way damage dead and living trees, brushwood or shrubs
  • gather or dig up plants
  • enter uncut meadows
  • introduce plant or animal species; this prohibition does not apply to garden plants on the grounds of the lighthouse
  • gather or trap insects or other animals, or in any other way disturb animal life
  • hunt or fish
  • remove or damage rocks or other natural objects, or any parts of shipwrecks
  • operate motor vehicles
  • stay longer than seven consecutive days and nights
  • set up tents at other than designated sites
  • light fires other than as instructed by park warden
  • bring house pets to the park
  • enter or pass through the seal sanctuary indicated on the map included as an appendix to these regulations
  • set up notice boards, posters and the like
  • land aircraft.   

In the event of special circumstances, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency may declare exceptions to these regulations.

Special permission of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency is required in order to conduct

  • scientific studies               
  • commercial activities, such as transporting tourists to the island.

Notwithstanding the prohibitions noted above, it is permitted:

  • for personnel authorized by the national park administration to carry out measures specified by an approved management plan.                            
  • for personnel authorized by the national park administration to use motor vehicles in the performance of their duties.       
  • for park administration officials to land aircraft in the performance of their duties.       
  • for officials carrying out duties related to military service, health care, police work, emergency rescue or maritime administration to land aircraft. If possible, the national park administration shall be notified prior to any such use; otherwise, notification shall be made as soon as possible following completion of each task.
  • to gather berries and mushrooms.      
  • to fish with handgear.

Proclamation SNFS (1987:19) concerning regulations for Gotska Sandön National Park

Based on § 4 of the National Park Ordinance (1987:938), the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency proclaims the [above] regulations for Gotska Sandön National Park in accordance with the second paragraph of § 5 of the Nature Conservation Act (1964:822).
Proclamation SNFS 1990:8. This proclamation shall come into effect two weeks after the date of printing. (Date of printing: 29 June 1990.)

Effective date

Proclamation SNFS 1987:19. This proclamation shall come into effect on 1 January 1988.

With this proclamation, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's proclamation (SNFS 1982:1, NV:8) concerning prohibited access to certain parts of Gotska Sandön National Park is revoked.
