The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency is cooperating directly with ten countries to support their efforts to establish effective environmental legislation and strengthen the environmental agencies in those countries. We also want to contribute to open collaboration between public agencies, individuals and trade and industry.

Our programmes cover Albania, Macedonia, Serbia, Ukraine, Belarus, China, India, Vietnam and Rwanda, funded by Sida (the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency). We also have joint projects with Russia. In addition, we are involved in projects being conducted by UN organisations and run an international course for public sector environment officers, most recently from Asia.

    • Our role

Swedish EPA development cooperation is based on our long experience as a central environmental agency. The initiative may come from the partner country or in response to wishes identified in Swedish development assistance or environmental cooperation.

    • Development projects

Some 25 projects are currently in progress. Projects in Eastern Europe and the Balkans often focus on developing legislation in harmony with EC regulations. Asian projects may help countries to comply with international environmental agreements, for ex.

    • Reports and Contacts

The Swedish EPA annual report to Sida provides an insight into our development cooperation. It also sets out our strategy for development cooperation, evaluations and other reports.
