Greenhouse gas emissions
Swedish greenhouse gas emissions per head of population are among the lowest in the member states of the OECD. The emissions have shown a declining trend in recent years, while economic growth has increased.

There has been a close link between economic growth and greenhouse gas emissions throughout the period of industrialisation. But Sweden is now one of the countries that can show that this link can be broken.

In 2008, Sweden emitted 64 million tonnes of greenhouse gases. Compared with 2007, this is a decrease of almost 2.2 million tonnes. Emissions are around 11.7 per cent below 1990 levels.

Around every five years Sweden submits a national communication to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The reporting entails a comprehensive review of both national emissions and the effects of measures taken.

This index ranks all 290 Swedish municipalities on the basis of the average carbon dioxide emissions of new cars. It is probably the first time ever an index with such local information has been produced.
